MU spring football practice begins

HUNTINGTON -- The thought that it has to be spring to open spring football practice is going out the window in 2013.

Despite starting later than many NCAA Division I teams, Marshall's football team will begin its month-long spring session in wintry conditions Tuesday afternoon in Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

Tuesday's high is expected to only reach 41 degrees and there is a chance of flurries in the forecast as the Thundering Herd hits the field.

The Tuesday session gets underway at 3:30 p.m., as will all weekday sessions during the spring.

Marshall will have three practices a week over the next five weeks, culminating with the annual Green-White scrimmage at 2 p.m. on April 27.

While practice is ongoing over the next month, so too are renovations to Joan C. Edwards Stadium, which will factor into the daily schedule.

Practices will still be open to the public except for a pair of scrimmages, which are scheduled for April 13 and April 20 at 9:15 a.m.

Those scrimmages will be open to Big Green members and 2013 season-ticket holders. Jason Corriher, assistant athletic director for media relations, said a valid Big Green card or a copy of the 2013 season-ticket renewal form will be needed to enter those practices. Also, students wishing to attend will need their student ID card on those days.

For the other 13 practices, everyone will be able to attend, but the entrances and locations of where to sit will be different.

Due to ongoing renovations adding suites to the West side (press box side) of the stadium, that side will be closed off during the practices.

Fans wishing to attend will enter through Gate D (northeast side of stadium) and fans will sit on the east side of the complex.

Due to Easter weekend, Marshall will practice on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday this week, but the normal schedule will be a Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday setup for the final four weeks of practice.

Each weekday practice will be a 3:30 p.m. session and the Saturday practices will start at 9:15 a.m., except for the April 27 Green-White game, which will begin at 2 p.m.
