Hurricane golfer wins W.Va. Senior Series
SISSONVILLE, W.Va. -- Harold Payne of Hurricane, former standout golfer at Marshall University, shot an even-par 71 in cool, breezy conditions at Edgewood Country Club on Monday to win the first West Virginia Senior Series event of the 2013 season. The event is the first for the 2013 West Virginia Golf Association season.
There were 76 players in the field Monday for the first of two senior events at Edgewood. Beckley's Sam Corey shot 78 to win the Silver Flight (60-69). Joe Wotring of St. Albans won the Gold Flight (70-plus) with a 78.
There are 23 events on the Senior Series schedule. The next stop will be Berry Hills Country Club in Charleston on April 22. Entry fee is $60 and all events have a shotgun start at 9 a.m. unless otherwise noted. Players must be over 50, an active member of the WVGA and carry an active USGA Handicap Index.
The finale will be Oct. 23 on The Greenbrier Resort's Greenbrier course in White Sulphur Springs. Players must compete in a minimum of 50 percent of all events to receive an invitation to play in that event. For more information or to register, visit www.wvga.org.
