MU women play host to Kent State
HUNTINGTON -- Marshall wraps up a three-game homestand to open the women's basketball season with a Saturday matinee game against Kent State.
The former Mid-American Conference rivals meet at noon in Cam Henderson Center.
Marshall is 0-2 with losses to Appalachian State (63-58) and Seton Hall (53-52). Kent State (2-0) has defeated Robert Morris (62-57) and Youngstown State (70-55)
Seton Hall dumped the Thundering Herd in Monday night game when Ebonie Williams made a 3-point basket with 16 seconds remaining. Williams led the Pirates from the Big East Conference with 17 points.
Marshall forward Tynikki Crook posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Alyssa Hammond added 10 points. Hammond was 4-for-4 on free throw attempts, extending her streak of 33 consecutive made free throws dating back to last season.
Hammond leads the team in scoring average (12.5) followed by Crook (12.0) and guard Rasheda Henriques (10.0).
The Herd is shooting only 26.6 percent as a team.
Kent State forward Yoshica Spears is averaging 9.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Kent State guards Rachel Bennett and Stephanie Gibson average 9.5 and 9.0 points respectively.
The Herd and Golden Flashes meet for the first time since the 2005 MAC tournament when Kent State won, 73-57. Kent State leads the all-time series by a 16-6 margin.
