Midland boys, Hurricane girls win at Class AAA track meet

ONA -- Cabell Midland's boys and Hurricane's girls won titles Wednesday night in the Class AAA, Region IV track and field meet at Chris Parsons Track.

The Knights piled up 159 points to repeat as boys champion. Hurricane had 150 points to take home the girls crown. The top three finishers in running events qualify for the state meet May 16-17 at Laidley Field in Charleston while the next best four times from the four regions will advance. The top four in field events along with anybody who hit the automatic qualifying marks also qualify for the state meet.

One of the best showings by Cabell Midland was in the shuttle hurdles where the foursome of Brian Dilcher, Drake Kinzel, John Thompson and Ryan Ramsby won in a meet-record time of 57.07 seconds. They finished two seconds ahead of second place St. Albans.

Ramsby also won the long jump (21-2) and Kinzel captured the 110 (15.4) and 300 (39.78) hurdles. David Bias won the 1600 (4:38.4) and 3200 (9:59.77) and lost a close race to Andrew Bailey of St. Albans in the 800.

Cabell Midland won the 4x100 relay with Tyler Bartley, Anthony Lovejoy, Zach Steele and Cullen Young posting a time of 45.11.

The Knights also won the 4x800. Nolan Queen, Dustin Stewart, Trey Beckett and Aaron Ross turned in a time of 8:27.56.

Hurricane's Terrell Martin swept the 100 (11.32), 200 (22.45) and 400 (49.70) sprints while anchoring the winning 4x400 relay (3:31).

For the girls, Hurricane ruled in the running. Brittany Carey won the 200 (26.82), Josie Crouch captured the 400 (57.84) and 800 (2:18.62) and Alex Dent won the 1600 (5:21.97) and 3200 (11:35.58). The champs also prevailed in the 4x800 (9:51.76) with Alex Dent, Sarah Davis, Crouch and Kristen Hayslett running legs.

Christina Austin for the Redskins won the shot put (40-2) and discus (115-11).

Danielle Winningham from Cabell Midland won the girls 300 hurdles (47.10).

Cabell Midland girls recorded wins in four relays, including the 4x100 with a time of 53.84 and the shuttle hurdles with a time of 1:07.07..

Christina Hamer, Rachel Williams, Winningham and Elayna Conard for the Knights won the 4x200 (1:49.54). Williams, Taylor Cassidy, Conard and Winningham placed first in the 4x400 (4:08.76).
