Foot injury sends Kayla to sideline
HUNTINGTON -- Gymnastics world vault champion Kayla Williams of Huntington has stopped her Elite training to focus on preparing for college.
Williams also recently suffered a plantar fascia tendon injury in her foot that impacted her decision, Inside Gymnastics Magazine reported.
"It was the right decision for me and I don't have any regrets," Williams said in the report.
The Huntington High School senior, who trains in Cincinnati and does her school work online, is verbally committed to attend the University of Alabama.
She plans to continue training in Cincinnati until she goes to college, the report said.
"The foot is healing and everything. It's doing really well, actually," said Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy coach Mary Lee Tracy in the report, "[but] her intention was to make the World team and when she realized that wasn't going to happen -- there just wasn't enough time --she decided to just get ready for college."
Williams took the gymnastics world by storm when she became the first female gymnast in U.S. history to win a world vault title when she won gold at the 2009 World Gymnastics Championships in London.
While she won't be defending the world title, the 2012 Olympics are still part of her dream.
