Barboursville girls fall to Florida team
WARNER ROBINS, Ga. -- Barboursville's 11-12 Softball team, the West Virginia state champions, lost 8-1 to New Tampa (Fla.) in the opening game of the Little League Softball Southeastern Regional on Thursday afternoon.
The contest was the first-ever game in the new ballpark at Warner Robins, Ga., the new home of the Little League Southeastern Region.
Florida broke out to a 2-0 lead early when Maddy Hall reached on an error and scored on a triple by Erica Matich, who later scored on an RBI groundout by Skyler Boynton.
Matich proved to be the offensive catalyst for Florida's state champions, reaching base and scoring in all three of her at-bats. She also stole two bases.
Barboursville got its lone run courtesy of an RBI groundout by Hannah Morgan, who knocked in Stephanie Flouhouse after Flouhouse reached on an error and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt.
Barboursville looks to earn its first win in pool play at 4 p.m. on Friday when the team takes on Daniel Boone (Tenn.).
