Herd women set to play Miami (Ohio)

November 26, 2009 @ 10:45 PM

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall locks up with another old rival, Miami (Ohio), Friday in women's basketball at the Pitt Thanksgiving Tournament.

Marshall (1-3) and the RedHawks (1-2) meet at 3 p.m. in a renewal of their old Mid-American Conference series. Pittsburgh plays Appalachian State at 1 p.m. The tournament concludes Saturday with games at 4 and 6 p.m.

Another MAC member, Ohio, defeated Marshall on Tuesday, 63-48. Tynikki Crook's 18 points led Marshall and Alyssa Hammond scored 10.

Crook, a 6-foot-1 junior forward, averages 13.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. The 6-1 Hammond, a senior, is scoring at an 11.0 clip and also averages 6.5 rebounds. Sophomore guard Rashedah Henriques is in double figures at 10 points a game.

Ohio connected on 11 of 18 3-point attempts in the win.

Getting players in double figures might be a key to Marshall's success. In its first four games Marshall had only two scorers reach double figures. Last season, when the Herd had three or more players in double figures, it won 16 of 19 times.

Miami (Ohio) is the third consecutive MAC foe for Marshall, which won a Nov. 21 game against Kent State, 57-50.

Since leaving the MAC for Conference USA in 2005, the Herd has posted a 2-3 mark against teams from its former league.

The RedHawks opened the season with a win against Bucknell (75-54) before falling to Arizona (91-67). Last weekend, Wake Forest downed the RedHawks, 91-67.

Freshman guard Courtney Osborn averages 17.3 points for the RedHawks.

Pitt (3-0) is No. 20 in the USA TODAY ESPN Top 25. Appalachian State (1-2) won its season opener at Marshall, 63-58.
