At the April summit, the West Virginia Golf Association said one of the goals for this year and beyond is generating an increase in junior play. Two courses, one in West Virginia and one in Kentucky, are taking steps to introduce and keep young people in the game.

Boys and girls age 15 and younger can get a junior membership at Orchard Hills Golf and C.C. in Barboursville. Fee is $125 and the season runs from June 1 to Aug. 31. Two clinics during the summer will be included.

At Diamond Links G.C. in Cannonsburg, Ky., children age 12 and younger can play free.

If other Tri-State golf courses do things to help juniors, let us know.

TOURNAMENT TIME: The third and final qualifying tournament for the West Virginia Open and West Virginia Mid-Amateur is Monday at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club in Hurricane. Play begins at 8 a.m. Earlier qualifiers were held at The Pines in Morgantown and Thursday on the Cobb Course at The Resort at Glade Springs.

Tim Fisher led the Mid-Am field at Glade Springs with a 5-under-par 67. Joel Davis posted a 70 to top the Open qualifiers.

The Open will be June 25-27 at Berry Hills Country Club in Charleston. The Mid-Am is next weekend on the Palmer Course at Stonewall Jackson Resort. It's match play and has 32 players. Pat Carter of Huntington is defending champion.

ORCHARD SCRAMBLES: Orchard Hills in Barboursville has two scrambles a week. The Saturday scramble starts between 8:30 and 10 a.m. depending on the time of year. The Jack Sharp Scramble is Thursdays at 5 p.m. There's a two-man tournament on Sundays at 2 p.m. Call 736-8225 for more details.

EVANS, DUTY WIN: Barry Evans shot a 1-over-par 73 in the final round at Sleepy Hollow G.C. on April 30 to win the professional division of the Kanawha Valley Golf Association Men's Championship.

Evans, the pro at Berry Hills, finished with a 215. Sleepy Hollow pro Jonathan Clark closed with 216 and Edgewood pro Craig Berner had 225 for third. John Duty shot 220 for 54 holes to claim the championship flight by a shot over Bobby Brandon.

UPDATE: The new clubhouse at Hidden Cove G.C. at Grayson Lake in Kentucky is open. Construction began last season. It rests between the front and back nines and has a large deck that offers some serious lounging, equipped with nice views, after a tough round. Eagle Ridge at Yatesville Lake State Park in Louisa, Ky., opened a new clubhouse last year.

PUBLIC EMPLOYEES EVENT: The 17th West Virginia Public Employees Tournament will be held May 19 at Pipestem Resort State Park. Trophies will be awarded in men's and women's gross and net divisions. Cost is $60. For more information or to register on-line, go to www.pipestemresort.com or call 304-466-1800.
