ERIE, Pa. -- The Erie RiverRats got a touchdown pass from Rod Rutherford to Darmel Whitfield with 13 seconds left to post a 47-43 win over the Huntington Heroes in an American Indoor Football Association game Friday night at Tullio Arena.
Erie (7-2) is 1-1 against the Heroes (5-4), who have lost three in a row. The two teams will meet again next Saturday at Big Sandy Superstore Arena. Kickoff is 7:05 p.m.
Huntington had taken a 43-40 lead late in the final period on a 29-yard field by Jason Cherry, his third of the game.
Huntington quarterback Darnell Kennedy threw for 256 yards and four touchdowns. Rutherford, who played at the University of Pittsburgh, finished with 225 through the air. The RiverRats, 3-0 with Rutherford calling signals, secured a berth in the AIFA playoffs.
