Burcham sets record to start season

ONA -- Cabell Midland's Jacob Burcham started the 2010 cross country season Saturday with a record-setting performance in the Class AAA boys division in the Geico Classic at Cabell Midland High School.
Burcham reeled off two solid mile splits and once on the Chris Parsons Track for the final push, the sophomore sprinted around the last curve and down the straight with the crowd urging him on to win the 5K race in a record time of 15.49. North Marion's Zach Tennant set the record at 15:52.48 when he won in 2008.
"It's pretty exciting. I made that a goal yesterday," Burcham said. "I heard the crowd. It helped, but it was pretty painful. I made it, and I've got time to recover."
Cabell Midland won the team title with 42 points. The Knights, who are defending state champions, had five runners in the top 15. Ryan Smith was second, Tyler Salmons eighth, Steven Egnatoff 13th and Jeremy Waugh 15th. Of the top five, only Smith is a senior.
"It's more about the team," Burcham said of the victory.
Burcham repeated as individual champion and shaved nearly a minute off that time. He was clocked in 16:40 in 2009.
In Class AAA girls, University had 45 points to edge out No. 2 Preston (47). Letitia Propst of Elkins was the top individual (19:48).
In Class AA, Fairland's boys finished on top with 97 points. That's two straight wins for the Dragons. They won last week at Pickerington. In the individual standings, Fairland's Tanner Mattie led there, too (16:39).
"That's why we come," Fairland coach Chuck Wentz said. "The competition is great here. It's a great way to measure your progress."
Fairview's girls won the Class AA/A crown with 76 points. Gallipolis was fourth with 127. The Blue Devils had the top runner in Peyton Adkins. The junior posted a time of 19:12 to make it three straight Geico wins.
This season, Burcham is concentrating only on cross country. A year ago, he split time between that sport and football.
"He's training at a higher level," Knights coach Chris Parsons said. "He's that much stronger."
Burcham said he calculated the time he needed for the splits at the mile, two mile and coming onto the track for the finale.
"I heard that first time and I was under. It gave me an extra boost," he said.
Preston's Peter Schwarzenber was second to Burcham (16:14), meaning the victor ran by himself most of the way.
"I don't mind," Burcham said. "I know how to handle it."
