MU ROUNDUP: Women's soccer tops Appy State

  HUNTINGTON -- Casey Walsh scored her first collegiate goal to help Marshall beat Appalachian State, 2-0, Sunday to give the Thundering Herd first place in the Best Western Huntington Mall Invitational soccer tournament at Sam Hood Field. The Thundering Herd (2-1-2) won both tournament games by shutout. The Mountaineers (2-2) wound up third.

  The Herd took the lead for good at 44:39 on some key passes by freshmen. Kaitlin Devine headed a centering pass into the 6-yard box that Janine Valerio got, and with her back facing the goal, she passed back to Walsh, who sent a shot over Appalachian State goalkeeper Caroline Clarke.

  In the 85th minute, Erin Blakely sent a long clearance ball that made it over an Appalachian State defender's head and found Erika Duncan. She popped the ball up over a charging Clarke for her first goal and a 2-0 lead. Clarke received a yellow card after colliding with Duncan.

  The Herd had an 11-5 edge in shots and the Mountaineers got just one on goal.

  In the other match Sunday, Radford blanked Iona, 1-0, to take second. The Highlanders (3-1) got beat by the Herd on Friday night. The Gaels have lost three straight matches by a goal. They placed fourth.

  The Herd had four players make the all-tournament team. Blakely was tournament MVP. Also honored were Freya Holdaway, Sarah Vinson and goalkeeper Lindsey Kerns, who recorded two shutouts. Radford selections were Julie Ruh'e, Kathleen Jarvis and Latrice Lee. Appalachian State's reps were Clarke and Lindsay Jaffe. Iona's Gabby D'Aprile and Lisa Murer round out the team.

  Marshall's next match is 4 p.m. Wednesday against Ohio University in Athens. On Sunday, Marshall travels to Lexington to take on Kentucky at 5 p.m.

Volleyball

  Cleveland State (6-0) received a 25-kill performance from Thunder Invitational Tournament MVP Kara Koch as the Vikings edged Marshall, 3-2 (21-25, 26-24, 25-21, 21-25 and 12-15) on Saturday evening at Cam Henderson Center.

  Cameron Yoho posted another solid performance as a middle blocker for the Thundering Herd (2-4), hitting at a .360 clip with 10 kills on 34 attempts with just one miscue. She made the Thunder Invitational All-Tournament Team along with teammate Elizabeth Fleming.

  Earlier Saturday, the Herd went needed five sets to beat the High Point Panthers, 3-2 (25-19,16-25, 25-16, 14-25 and 15-13).

  Marshall's next action is a tri-match Tuesday at home with Morehead State and North Carolina A&T. The Herd meets North Carolina A&T at noon and Morehead State at 7. Those two teams clash at 3.

Men's soccer

  Marshall takes on Radford at 1 p.m. today at Sam Hood Field. The unbeaten Herd has yet to give up a goal through 200 minutes of play. The Highlanders (1-0) needed overtime to beat Mt. St. Mary's, 1-0, in its opener.
