Meredith, longtime Russell coach, dies

ASHLAND -- Marvin Meredith, the retired Russell High School boys basketball coach, died Tuesday, The Independent newspaper of Ashland reported. He was 85.

Meredith coached the Red Devils to 677 victories in a 31-year career that included Kentucky 16th Region championships in 1967, 1968 and 1972. He also coached the Kentucky All-Stars in 1987 and made eight trips to the regional finals.

He was a Catlettsburg High School graduate who went on to play basketball and run track at Marshall College. He is listed by Marshall as a player for coach Cam Henderson in the 1950-51 season.

At one time he held the Ohio Valley Conference record for the 100-yard dash with a time of 10.20 seconds.

Meredith served three terms as a Boyd County commissioner.
