W.Va. teams tested by elite of Region I

July 05, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

BARBOURSVILLE -- Saturday was anything but a holiday for West Virginia teams at the US Youth Soccer Region I Championships.

The Mountain State's 19 representatives left the fields without a win on Independence Day after taking on some of the region's top competition.

One major bright spot for West Virginia soccer has been the play of the U-12 8v8 teams -- especially that of the WV Chaos girls, who are 1-0-1 through two pool play games.

The Chaos had the state's best chance at a victory on Saturday, scoring an early goal against the CNY United Fury to take a 1-0 lead at the break. But in the second half, a misplayed pass resulted in a goal for the Fury to end the game at a 1-1 draw.

"It was an unlucky touch to make it a tie game, but they came out and scored in the first 10 minutes of the game," Chaos coach Ashleigh Woods said. "That's exciting for us going forward."

The Chaos were not the only U-12 8v8 team to fare well on Saturday. The West Virginia United Soccer Club Blue boys' squad battled to a 2-2 draw with Connecticut's Morris SC.

Also in the other U-12 8v8 girls matchup, the West Virginia Soccer Club Arsenal fell, 1-0, to New York West's Empire-Syracuse in a tightly-contested matchup.

For the second day in a row, the Charleston FC Elite U-18 boys team lost 1-0 -- this time to New York West's BC United Fusion, coached by former West Virginia University men's soccer coach Paul Bruno.

The WVSC Rowdies 14 girls' team also fell 1-0 to Eastern New York's Massapequa Elite.

West Virginia teams took on two opponents who were defending Region I champions along with another team that has already punched its ticket to the national tournament based on its success in the U.S. Youth Soccer Premier League.

Just how tough was Saturday's competition?

Ask WVSC Elite U-15 boys coach Bob Gray, who watched as several players went off in the first half during his team's physical 2-0 loss to Maryland's Casa Mia Bays.

Almost immediately, Gray's team watched scoring threat Thomas Trupo leave the field with concussion-like symptoms after taking a shot to the head. A sprained ankle, scratched cornea and leg injury later and Elite was without four starters against the No. 4 team in the nation.

"We clearly were outmanned today. That team clearly was outstanding. It would not surprise me if that team could win a national tournament," Gray said. "It was a game in which with that team's skill, we could have easily been blown out, but our kids hung tough and played exceptionally well given the circumstances. It was a gutty, gutty performance."

In other action from around the tournament, Virginia's McLean MPS Freedom celebrated a successful day as all four of its tournament entries celebrated victories, including a pair of convincing wins at the U-19 level.

On the boys' side, the U-19 MPS McLean FC defeated Rhode Island's Bayside Stompers, 5-0. The U-19 girls soundly defeated West Virginia's River Valley Soccer Club Shock, 7-0.

At U-16 boys, the McLean Hurricanes defeated Pennsylvania's Beadline Blue, 2-1, while at U-18 girls, the McLean Freedom defeated Delaware's United Blue Monkeys, 3-0.

Nine entrants from Beadling are representing Pennsylvania West with mixed results. The teams went 3-5-1 on Saturday with victories going to the U-12 boys, U-17 boys and U-18 girls.

Maryland's Bethesda Freedom U-14 girls team is the reigning Region I champion, but the team is still seeking its first tournament win after a 1-1 draw with Delaware's CSA Magic. The draw moved the team's record to 0-1-1 after two days.

Only one defending champion lost on Saturday. U-14 girls Scorpions SC Elite of Massachusetts fell to Eastern New York's Syosset Rough Riders, 4-1.

Other defending champions posted a 6-0-2 record on Saturday and moved one step closer to defending their titles.
