MU softball signs high school teammates

July 17, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- High school teammates Jessica Ferrick and Victoria Marvin from Centreville, Va., signed with the Marshall University softball team.

Marshall also signed Morgan Cottrell from Spencer, W.Va., head coach Shonda Stanton said in a news release.

They join Ashley Gue, Bri Hope, Taylor Thompson, Jazmine Valle and Brittney Ybarra in the Thundering Herd freshman class.

"This is a big class of newcomers with a variety of successful experience who will challenge each other and our returning players to elevate our level of play," Stanton said. "The depth in this year's roster will be key in our fight for the 2010 Conference USA title."

Ferrick plays first base and pitches. She posted a .450 batting average and had an 0.50 ERA as a senior. Marvin is an infielder and can play the catcher's position. She had a .471 batting average and team-best 28 RBIs.

They both play for Jerry Sokol's Xplosion club team based in Clifton, Va.

Cottrell set season and career stolen base records at Roane County High School. She was also the senior class valedictorian with a 4.0 PGA.

"All three of these student-athletes excel in the classroom and on the field," Stanton said.
