Tennessee rallies past WV
HUNTINGTON -- On Monday night, West Virginia entered its nightcap with Tennessee needing a victory to advance to today's semifinal.
However, Tennessee didn't quit and earned a 6-5 win to spoil the host state's chances.
Even in defeat, manager Gary Barnard was proud of his players, and he saluted League 3, the hosts of the tournament.
"I told our boys not to hang their heads, we have gone farther than any 9-10 year old all-star team from Ripley," he said. " They have a lot of baseball ahead of them, I have had a blast this summer. I hope I get to coach them again sometime in the future. Also, I think the people at League 3 have done a fantastic job with this tournament. It's a great tournament I hope it continues."
West Virginia jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Tennessee climbed back into the contest and overcame the boys from Ripley in the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Tennessee loaded the bases on three consecutive singles. Dawson Powers hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score the game-winning run for Tennessee.
In the top of the frame, West Virginia's Nolan May was hit by a pitch to tie the game at 5-5 after a walk and two errors loaded the bases. Tennessee pitcher Kyle Palmer retired two consecutive batters to get out of the inning.
Early on, it appeared West Virginia was well on its way. In the second inning, Jared Bumpus hit a three-run double to center field and later scored on a dropped pop fly to give West Virginia a 4-0 lead.
Tennessee stormed back in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs to take the lead.
After scoring its first two runs, Kyle Ingleburger doubled in two more for Tennessee before scoring on an error. Cody Lester later doubled in a run to give Tennessee the outright lead.
West Virginia's Bumpus finished 2-for-2 with three RBI.
Tennessee's Tyler Corley went 3-for-3.
ALABAMA 5, GEORGIA 4: Alabama is moving on to the semifinals, thanks to a dramatic walk-off homerun by Kyle Chandler to defeat Georgia, 5-4.
In the bottom of the third, Alabama's Brooks Carlson hit a towering three-run homerun to give Alabama a 4-3 lead.
After Georgia tied the game in the fifth, Chandler hit the homerun of the tournament.
Due to each team being tied with two wins in its pool play division, the Defensive Runs allowed Ratio was used.
The runs a particular team gives up is divided by the team's number of innings. Florida finished first in the division, and next the head-to-head rule is used. With Alabama defeating Georgia on Monday, Alabama moves on and Georgia is eliminated.
Alabama's Brooks Carlson went 2-for-2 with a homerun and 3 RBI.
Georgia's Brent Morrison went 2-for-4.
SOUTH CAROLINA 10, VIRGINIA 4: South Carolina rebounded from Sunday's loss to defeat Virginia to advance to the semifinals. Virginia won its previous two games and will move on to the semifinals.
