Ironton tops Zane Trace to capture district crown
ATHENS, Ohio -- No. 2 seed Ironton opened a 12-5 lead after one period and went on to defeat No. 1 Chillicothe Zane Trace, 50-30, Saturday in the Ohio Division III girls district championship game at Ohio University's Convocation Center.
The Lady Fighting Tigers (15-7) advance to the regional semifinals. They will play Sugarcreek Garraway at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday in the Convo. Game two will match No. 1 Oak Hill against Albany Alexander at 8.
Lorna Ceaser led Ironton with 20 points. Brea Tackett added 12 and Nikki Elswick 10 and 13 rebounds as Ironton beat the Lady Pioneers (16-7) in the district title game for the second straight year.
At the foul line, the Lady Fighting Tigers converted 15 of 19 attempts while the Lady Pioneers went 2 for 15. The champs ruled the boards, 43-18. Zane Trace, which managed just 15 points in each half, made two of 19 three-point attempts. McKenzie Tatman the Lady Pioneers with eight points.
Oak Hill (23-0) pounded Frankfort Adena, 82-33, in the opener Saturday. Albany Alexander edged North Adams, 50-48, in the only close call.
Rebecca Puckett tallied 28 points to lead Oak Hill to its second lopsided win over Adena. The Oaks led 26-9 after one period and 52-17 at halftime. Karissa Adkins added 19 points and Mikie Strite 15. Oak Hill hit nine three-pointers.
Albany Alexander advanced when Kayla Radekin got loose on a fast break and scored on a layup with five seconds left to win it. This is the second district title in four seasons for the Spartans (18-5) and third in school history.
Karli Beasley of North Adams (16-6) led all scorers with 28 points. She got off a last-second shot for the win, but missed.
Whitney Daugherty, who found Beasley open for the winning shot, led Alexander with 15 points. Radekin added 11 and eight rebounds.
Kentucky
Rowan County beat East Carter, 46-34, in the girls 16th Region championship game at Morehead State to advance to the Girls Sweet 16.
