Tolsia advances to Class AA semis
CHARLESTON-- For the first time in three years, Tolsia has advanced to the state semifinals in Class AA girls basketball tournament.
Led by Kara Pollinger, the Rebels jumped out to a first-quarter lead and never looked back to earn a 40-30 win over Oak Glen in the first game of the 2010 West Virginia Girls State Basketball Tournament at the Charleston Civic Center.
Pollinger, who signed last week to play collegiate basketball at the U.S. Naval Academy, had 11 points, 14 rebounds and six steals to lead Tolsia to its 20th win of the season.
Katie Lahoda continued her strong postseason by adding 10 points in the win.
Taylor White scored 10 points to lead Oak Glen, which ended the season at 16-9.
Tolsia will now take on Scott in the first Class AA semifinal at 9:30 a.m.on Friday.
SOUTH CHARLESTON 61, BRIDGEPORT 45: The Black Eagles used a balanced offense and strong second-quarter surge to dispose of Bridgeport in the first game in the Class AAA bracket.
Brittany Gordon led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds while Sissy Wagner and Alexa Morgan each added 13. Keke Allen also had 10 for South Charleston (25-1).
Courtney Small came off the bench to lead Bridgeport with 12 points while Kelsey Mullins added 11 points. Kaitlyn Farley chipped in with nine points and 10 rebounds, but the Indians could not overcome 20 turnovers in the contest.
South Charleston plays in Friday's 9 p.m. Class AAA semifinal against the victor of Thursday's Parkersburg South/Wheeling Park contest.
Scott 56, Liberty-Harrison 35
Makenzie White had 19 points, 12 rebounds and six assists to lead Scott to an easy win over Liberty-Harrison on Wednesday afternoon.
The Skyhawks jumped out to a 28-16 halftime lead after a 13-4 run in the second quarter. White scored 11 of her 19 points in the first half.
Brittani Adkins added 13 points and seven rebounds for Scott, which will take on Tolsia at 9:30 a.m. on Friday.
Savanna Trent had 12 points for Liberty-Harrison, which ends its season at 13-10.
Summers County 87, Frankfort 28
Summers County forced 26 first-half turnovers and 46 for the game while getting a balanced offensive attack to cruise past Frankfort in the Class AA first-round contest.
Hallie Gunnoe led Summers County (26-0) with 19 points while adding nine steals in the win. Hanna Gunnoe and Leslie Mack each ended the game with 16 while Candace Brown added 10. Ashley Brown also scored seven points, dished out seven assists and added 10 steals in the victory.
Frankfort actually jumped out to a 2-0 lead 27 seconds into the game on a layup by Savannah Hose, but the Bobcats scored the final 25 points of the first quarter during a 40-2 run that ended the game quickly.
Madison Shambaugh led Frankfort, who ended its season at 8-13, with six points and eight rebounds.
North Marion 65, Ripley 43
Hailey Garrett had 15 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Huskies, who used a strong second-half to avert a scare by the Vikings.
Mariah Byard added 15 points, Kaitlyn Antolock netted 14 and Courtney Swiger scored 12 on four 3-pointers for North Marion (22-1).
The Huskies used a 10-0 run in the third quarter to end Ripley's momentum after the Vikings had reeled off 14 straight points to knot the game at 23 early in the third quarter.
Samantha Hatcher scored 17 points while Taylor Wilson added 13 and Alannah Sheets 12 in the loss for Ripley, who ends the year at 17-9.
