Christian Buckley of Poca High is Gamer of the Week

May. 03, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week's Gamer of the Week award to Christian Buckley of Poca High School.

The Poca High School Track Team has had a lot of recent success, winning the last two regional meets. Sophomore standout thrower, Christian Buckley, is hoping for a third next week as they try to complete the three-peat.

"We are doing great right now and we're hoping to win the Cardinal Conference Championship this week," says Buckley. Christian leads all West Virginia AA athletes by more than 3 feet in the shot and more than 16 feet in the discus so far this season. His personal record in the shot put is 49 feet, 11 inches, and 162 feet, 8 inches in the discus.

When asked what motivates him as an athlete, he answered, "Becoming a better thrower is my motivation. I just want to keep improving and I try to beat my PR every meet."

What's even more impressive is he has done all this without a formal throwing coach at the high school. "I do most of my weight lifting at my house and practice my technique at various high schools around the area. My dad threw in high school, too, so he and Phil Gregory help me with my form as well."

Maybe one of the biggest influences for him has been his older brother. "I got into the sport because of my older brother. He started throwing and I would throw them back for him when I was in the fourth grade and I just really loved it. I started doing that in the summers and just kept going and really enjoyed it. My brother has been my training partner for as long as I have been throwing, but I'm going to lose him to the Air Force Academy this year."

My impression of Christian was that he is an extremely hard worker with a ton of potential to succeed in whatever he does. In addition to throwing for the track team, has a 4.0 GPA, and is a member of Mu Alpha Theta and Student Council.

Please look for other local area high school athletes to be named next week's Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald.
