California golfer tops local US Open qualifier

SISSONVILLE, W.Va. -- Bryan Pierce of Nipomo, Calif., shot a 4-under-par 67 to win medalist honors in the U.S. Open local qualifier held Wednesday on the par-71 Edgewood Country Club course.

Pierce got one of three spots available for the sectional qualifiers scheduled June 3 at 11 sites across the United States. Sectionals are 36 holes. The U.S. Open will be played June 13-16 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.

Also moving on to sectionals are Drew Ernst of Seneca, S.C., shot shot a 69 and Lawrence Largent of Kingsport, Tenn., who shot 70 and wo a five-way playoff to get the final berth.

Alternates are Paul Saad of Lexington, Ky., and Lanto Griffin of Blacksburg, Va. Wheeling's Cole Hale and Marshall golfer Logan Lagodich also shot 70.

Former Marshall golfer Christian Brand, who now plays professionally, turned in a 72.
