Apr. 20, 2013 @ 11:20 PM

MUNCIE, Ind. -- New Ball State coach James Whitford has hired former Florida star Brett Nelson as associate head coach.

Nelson is the first assistant Whitford has hired since taking the job two weeks ago.

Nelson spent the last two seasons at Drake after coaching three seasons at Marshall and one at Arkansas, all as an assistant. He also served as director of basketball operations for one season each at Colorado State and VCU.

Nelson was the star of Florida's national runner-up team in 2000, finishing second in the SEC's MVP voting. He finished his career at the school record-holder in 3-pointers made (274) and attempted (689), second in steals (199) and 14th in scoring (1,416 points) and played professionally in Sweden before starting his coaching career.
