Marshall baseball tops UCF
ORLANDO -- Marshall's Thundering Herd scored in the top of the 10th inning Friday night and defeated UCF, 5-4, in a Conference USA baseball game at Jay Bergman Field.
Marshall catcher Matt Kirkwood started the winning rally with an infield single, moved up with a stolen base and went to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Isaac Ballou reached base on a fielder's choice and Kirkwood scored an unearned run.
Relief pitcher Josh King came on in the bottom of the 10th and stopped the Knights to get a save. Reliever Ryan Hopkins was the winner.
Marshall (14-22, 4-5 C-USA) and UCF (20-19, 6-7) meet again Saturday at 4 p.m.
Ballou led off the game with a double and scored the first run on a single by Nathan Gomez.
Gray Stafford doubled in the fourth inning, Gomez advanced the runner with a single and Chase Vogelbach picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Marshall scored twice in the sixth inning when Vogelbach singled and came home on Kirkwood's double. Anotber run scored on an error.
UCF had a four-run rally in the seventh inning when Chris Taladay's triple knocked in a pair.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Marshall is one of 10 women's teams competing Saturday at the Heart of the Bluegrass Track Classic, the inaugural meet at the new University of Kentucky track and field complex.
