Burcham breezes to win in Ohio race
HUNTINGTON -- Barboursville Middle School distance runner Jacob Burcham competed unattached and won the 1,600-meter run Sunday at the Ohio Middle School Track and Field Championships at Pickerington North High School.
Burcham, a freshman next school year at Cabell Midland, breezed to victory in the Division I race by nearly 16 seconds with a time of 4:36.46.
He set the top time in the nation for middle school runners of 4:33.22 on April 29 in the Hurricane Invitational.
The Chesapeake Middle School Striders also were represented at the meet and brought home some medals.
Chesapeake sixth-grader Jake Wireman was a double winner in the pole vault and 110 hurdles. He placed second in the 200 hurdles.
Seventh-grader Chad Meadows was second in the 200 hurdles.
Chesapeake seventh- and eighth-graders Brandon Clagg, Meadows, T.J. McCoy and Nick Lucas ran fifth in the 4x100 relay. The 4x200 team of Clagg, Josh Browning, Meadows and Lucas placed fourth.
