Herd women drop 4th straight
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Marshall led Memphis at halftime, but turnovers proved to be the Herd's downfall in a 71-58 loss to the Tigers at Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
The loss was the fourth straight for Marshall (12-7, 3-3 Conference USA), who had won its first three contests in conference play.
Marshall led by as many as nine in the first half, but Memphis used a 23-4 run during a 10-minute stretch spanning the late first half and early second half.
Jasmine Lee capped the run with a layup that gave Memphis a 51-41 advantage with 11:45 remaining.
The Herd was unable to contain Lee, who finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds in the contest.
Marshall trimmed the deficit to 55-52 following a pair of free throws by Alyse Poindexter with 6:24 left, but turnovers plagued the Herd down the stretch as Memphis put the game away.
Lateidra Elliott led Marshall with 13 points while Shay Weaver had 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Herd used one of its best offensive halves of the season to take a 37-32 advantage at halftime. In the first 20 minutes, Marshall shot 48 percent from the floor.
Marshall jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first eight points of the game to set the tone early. However, Memphis came back and took a 16-15 lead following an 11-2 run in a three-minute stretch.
Undaunted, the Herd came back behind a strong 3-point shooting effort to take the lead.
Marshall was 5-of-7 from long range in the first half with Elliott hitting both of her outside attempts in the first half and Shay Weaver hitting a pair of 3-pointers late in the first half.
Weaver's last 3-pointer gave Marshall its largest lead at 37-28 with 50 seconds left before the Tigers got a pair of baskets to end the half to cut the deficit to five points at the break.
In addition to Lee's strong game, the Tigers got 16 points and eight rebounds from Brittany Carter and 10 each from Ramses Lonlack and Nicole Dickson.
