Huntington High hoping to reverse fortunes in home opener
HUNTINGTON -- Huntington High came into Week 1 with high hopes, only to be knocked off track by Woodrow Wilson 41-20. The Highlanders already have a sense of urgency this week against Riverside, fearing to avoid the dreadful start they had last season.
The Highlander defense fell under the bus early against the Flying Eagles, allowing a whopping 442 yards rushing. Huntington High will have to make the proper changes on defense and stop a Riverside squad that loves to run the ball.
"Our defense has to get off the field because we gave up over 400 yards rushing last week and we can't afford to do that again," Huntington High coach Zach Wilson said. "The kids are pumped up for this game and we have had a much better week of practice."
But Riverside had its own struggles to deal with in a 28-8 loss to South Charleston. The Warriors offense was stymied, rushing 42 times for just 52 yards.
South Charleston's defense also struggled, falling victim to the big play on touchdown passes of 73 and 92 yards for South Charleston. That sets up well for Huntington High standout quarterback C.J. Crawford who is known to push the envelope to produce a big play.
Against Woodrow Wilson, Crawford made too many mistakes and failed to produce the fireworks on offense that he is capable of providing. Crawford completed just 9-of-23 passes and threw three key interceptions. His ground attack was also shut down, as he rushed for only 31 yards and a touchdown.
Huntington High will need Crawford to step up and make smart decisions with the ball if the team hopes to speed past Riverside. Other players will also have to step up and take all the pressure off Crawford.
Sophomore running back Gary Felder could be the X-factor in Huntington High's offense. Last week, Felder rushed for 60 yards on just three carries. His carries were limited with the Highlanders falling behind early and resorting to catch-up mode.
If the Highlanders' defense can keep Riverside off the board, Huntington High might rely heavily on the quick-footed Felder. If the 20-yard average is any real indication, this underclassman could turn out to be the team's most pleasant surprise.
"We have to keep the ball away from Riverside and take advantage of our opportunities," Wilson said. "I think our kids know we can win, we just have to do what it take to get the job done."
