Generals fall to Redskins in Class AAA debut

September 05, 2008 @ 12:00 AM

HURRICANE -- Winfield played its first football game Friday night as a member of Class AAA. Hurricane didn't give the Generals a warm welcome.

The Redskins did welcome the Generals into their stadium, however, after a press box fire at Winfield's stadium earlier in the week forced a change of venues.

That's about where he hospitality ended, however, as Hurricane logged a 37-14 victory.

"It was real important for us to come out with a win tonight because this is one of our biggest rivalry games," Hurricane back Terrell Martin said.

Martin, the reigning Class AAA track and field sprint champion, had TD bursts of 49, 13 and 47 yards.

Winfield struck first and had a 14-13 halftime lead. Hurricane kicked its offense into high gear with 24 unanswered points in the second half and pulled away.

Hurricane quarterback Luke Briggs started his team toward victory with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell Bumpus at the beginning of the third quarter.

Briggs made his first career start as a junior.

"Bumpus and I have been working on that pass in practice a lot, and he did a really great job," Briggs said.

The Redskins stretched extended their lead to 25-14 with Briggs scoring on a 1-yard run.

Martin's 47-yard scoring run past the defense sealed the deal with about nine minutes left in the game.

But, some extra insurance was provided late when Trey Renick intercepted a Winfield pass and ran it back 33 yards to the end zone.
