Herd falls to Western Kentucky in MU Invitational
HUNTINGTON -- After disposing of East Tennessee State in the day's early match, Marshall dropped a 3-0 decision to Western Kentucky in the final match of the Marshall University Invitational on Saturday evening.
The loss drops Marshall to 4-2 overall while Western Kentucky improved to 6-0 on the season.
Elizabeth Herman and Megan Carlson led the Herd with eight kills each, but Marshall endured a tough night on the offensive end against a solid Hilltopper team that limited them to a .082 hitting percentage.
Western Kentucky constantly was the aggressor and kept Marshall on its heels en route to the match sweep.
"I think this team better learn how to play well under pressure or every time we play a top level team like Cincinnati and Western Kentucky, the pressure is going to keep crumbling us," Marshall coach Mitch Jacobs said. "To be a young team is one thing to say, but it is not an excuse because we are capable of playing tough."
The day's first game showed glimpses of how solid that Marshall can be as the team jumped out to a 2-0 lead and won the match 3-1 over East Tennessee State.
Emily Sullivan belted 14 kills in the victory over ETSU, which caught fuel late from a strong defensive effort. The Buccaneers hit just .025 for the match.
The weekend effort also included a Friday victory over Virginia Tech in which the Herd came back from down 2-1 to take the match.
"We are certainly disappointed with how we played late today, but we know what we need to do and we will get better," Jacobs said. "We need the fans to come out and support us on Tuesday night."
Tuesday night's 7 p.m. match against Morehead State will be the fans' last opportunity to see Marshall at the Cam Henderson Center for a while. The next home game following the match against the Eagles will not occur until Sept. 26 for the conference home opener against Memphis.
Men's soccer
HUNTINGTON -- Marshall men's soccer's rally fell short as Liberty held on for a 3-2 decision Saturday at Sam Hood Field.
The Thundering Herd (0-3) found themselves in a 2-0 hole at the half but managed to tie the Flames (3-0) late into the contest before giving up the go ahead goal in the 69th minute.
"This is good team that we played this afternoon," head coach Bob Gray said. "This team has been to the NCAA tournament and is picked to do so again. I thought we played well again, but we just came up on the losing end."
Liberty jumped out to a 2-0 lead following a goal off a cross for Darren Amoo and an own goal after a pass bounced off the head of Marshall's Dustin Dawes and into his own net.
Marshall's Aaron Dini scored on a pass from Nick Daniele to cut the lead in half and the score would even up after Liberty had the ball find the net off of one of its own players.
However, Justin Willoughby scored five minutes later to give Liberty the lead and the win.
Marshall will take on host Duquesne in the Duquesne Invitational Friday at 7:30 p.m.
