"Mount Thundermore" of Marshall sports

Jul. 27, 2013 @ 02:40 PM

Remember that sheer rock cliff standing silent sentry over the City of Huntington on Route 60 East?

Well, the time finally has arrived to put the finishing touches on that wall of rock near the entrance to Rotary Park as I sculpt my imaginary version of Mount Rushmore.

First, there was a football version of “Mount Thundermore,” honoring four Marshall University greats who deserve to be etched in stone. The list included Bobby Pruett, Jackie Hunt, Byron Leftwich and Chad Pennington.

Next, there was a basketball version citing four Thundering Herd stars who earned the right to be commemorated. That quartet included Cam Henderson, Mike D’Antoni, Hal Greer and Leo Byrd.

Now, the time has come for the consummate “Mount Thundermore” featuring the four greatest sports figures in Marshall’s long history.

To find out who Chuck Landon placed on his "Mount Thundermore," check Sunday's edition of The Herald-Dispatch in print and online.
