Former Herd assistant coach dies
HUNTINGTON -- Former Marshall University men's basketball assistant coach C.J. Woollum died Wednesday in the Newport News, Va., area after a battle with cancer. He was 64.
Woolum worked on the Marshall staffs of head coaches Bob Daniels (1975-77), Stu Aberdeen (1978-79) and Bob Zuffelato (1980-83).
He retired as Christopher Newport University’s athletic director in June 2012 when he assumed the role of athletic director emeritus.
His 28 years at the Newport News school included 26 seasons as head basketball coach of the Captains. From 1984 through 2010 his teams were 502-221 and made 17 appearances in the NCAA Division III tournament.
Funeral arrangements were pending Thursday, the school said in a press release.
A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m., Sunday, in the Freeman Center basketball arena at Christopher Newport.
