Bobcats bury MU women

November 25, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

ATHENS, Ohio -- Marshall knew going into Tuesday's game that Ohio's 3-point shooters could wake up from their poor shooting so far this season.

Unfortunately for Marshall, that's exactly what happened.

Ohio (2-2) made 11 of 18 attempts from the 3-point line and led for all but six seconds in a 63-48 win over Marshall in a women's basketball game at the Convocation Center.

"They did a really good job of attacking and putting us in positions to where their shooters could get shots," Marshall head coach Royce Chadwick said. "Conversely, we were attacking the rim and getting the ball where we wanted to in the game. We just weren't able to get an offensive rhythm going."

Marshall (1-3) took a 2-0 lead off the tip on a layup by Angelica Harris but a 3-pointer by Jennifer Bushby quickly erased that lead and proved to be a precursor for the remainder of the evening.

The Thundering Herd did not lead again and the Bobcats proceeded to shoot 49 percent from the floor to earn the win.

Coming into the contest, Ohio had hit just 9-of-39 attempts from beyond the arc, but they made them in bunches on Tuesday.

The Bobcats led 46-39 with 7:20 left in the contest, but hit four 3-pointers during a 14-3 run to push the lead to 60-42, the biggest of the evening.

"We have scouting reports that we bring into the locker room and try to take to the floor," Chadwick said. "We felt that Bushby and (Jenny) Poff were very good players and lifetime tremendous shooters. Quite honestly, we got hung up on some screens and let them get shots off on us."

While Ohio got rid of its offensive troubles, Marshall continued a season-long trend of offensive struggles.

The Herd failed to reach the 60-point mark for the fourth-straight game and senior leader Chantelle Handy was shut out of the scoring column.

Tynikki Crook scored a team-high 16, but had only four rebounds. Alyssa Hammond scored 10 and had seven rebounds, all in the first half.

Before Ohio's run, Marshall appeared to be getting back into the contest.

The Herd trailed by double-digits at the break, but got a pair of baskets by Hammond and Kendra King early in the second half to cut Ohio's lead to four.

However, each time that the Herd got close, a Bobcat was there to put an end to any comeback attempt.

Ohio used the outside shot to quickly gain an advantage.

The Bobcats hit four of their first five shots from the outside, including a 3-pointer by Jenny Poff, to take a 16-6 lead about six minutes into the contest.

After a timeout by Chadwick, Marshall reeled off nine straight points to pull within one before Ashley Fowler hit a three-pointer to end the run.

The Herd got no closer as the team went cold, going the last 6:38 of the first half without a field goal. With Marshall unable to connect, Ohio scored the final nine points of the half to take a 30-19 lead into halftime.

Poff came into the game hitting just one of her 14 3-point attempts, but hit four to lead four Ohio players in double figures with 14 points. Ashley Fowler added 13 points, Jennifer Bushby notched 12 and Da'Keisha Mann netted 10.
