Senior Classic coming back to Huntington
HUNTINGTON -- The West Virginia Senior Sports Classic is coming back to Huntington and Cabell County for 2013 and 2014, according to a statement issued by the Pullman Plaza Hotel.
The hotel is sponsoring the event, along with St. Mary's Medical Center, the City of Huntington and the Cabell-County Visitors and Convention Bureau.
The Classic has about 17 events for men and women ages 50 and older, with athletes separated by gender and five-year age increments. Events range from basketball to track and field and swimming.
The Classic actually began in Huntington in 1992 with 20 athletes participating.
Charleston has been the host city for the past several years, and, this year, more than 500 athletes participated, many of whom qualified for the national Senior Sports Classic.
The 2013 Classic will take place in June, though specific dates have not been set.
The event is expected to pump about $200,000 into the local economy over the next two years.
"We are excited about the games moving to Huntington in 2013 and 2014, and look forward to the opportunities the city and county offer our athletes," said Classic president, Argyle McMillion, in a written statement.
The Classic is currently seeking volunteers to help with the event, and anyone interested can contact Crystal Robinson at email@example.com or by calling 304-691-5414.
