Herd defeats Miami in tennis
HUNTINGTON -- Marshall defeated No. 71 Miami (Ohio), 6-1, in women's tennis Sunday at the Huntington Tennis Club to improve to 6-0 on the season.
"I thought we played well today against a very good Miami team," Thundering Herd coach John Mercer said. "We knew we were going to be in for a tough match, and I was glad to see our team rise to the competition. Hopefully we can continue to keep playing well and keep getting wins."
With a dominating doubles performance on court one from Michaela Kissell and Dominika Zaprazna (8-1), the first point would be decided at Nos. 2 and 3.
At No. 2, Deanna Bailey and Thaddea Lock stormed back from a 5-2 deficit to reel off six of the last seven games and earn an 8-6 victory over Anastasia Dracheva and Brintney Larson. The win secured a 1-0 lead heading into singles. Isabell Raich and Kara Kucin won at No. 3.
In singles, Kissell beat Miami's Stephanie Danesis in straight sets to go to 5-0. Catherine Kellner won at No. 4 and Bailey at No. 5. Kellner's record is 6-0, which is the most wins for any Herd player.
Raich needed a tie-break to win her match to stay unbeaten. Kristina Koprcina got the Herd's final point.
Marshall's next match is Wednesday against Kentucky in Lexington.
The Herd entertains Virginia Tech at noon Saturday at the Huntington Tennis Club.
