Winfield powers past Huntington High, 63-44
HUNTINGTON -- Adam Kline's work down low in the first half and ability to feed cutting guards driving to the basket in the second powered Winfield to a 63-44 win over Huntington High in boys basketball Monday night at Huntington High.
Kline, a 6-foot-5 center, got open along the back line in Huntington's zone in the first half and scored 13 points. The Highlanders got hands up around him in the second, so he dished to the open man, mainly Austin Lewis. Kline finished with 20 points and Lewis 14, all coming in the second half.
"Adam's so good in the post," Generals coach Pat McGinnis said "We spread the floor. We set screens and he got free. Why not give him the ball? When they doubled down, he felt the pressure and got the ball out to the shooter."
Ricky Cantrell added 13 points and Aaron Keefer 11 to show Winfield's balance.
Huntington High's Kwanis Hayes finished with 24 points to lead all scorers.
Kline said Winfield's ability to swing the ball around out front helped get him free in the first half.
"We were able to reverse the ball and find gaps," he said.
For Huntington High, very little went right early.
"That's the first time all year I've been disappointed in our effort," Highlanders coach Ron Hess said. "We started slowly and got our heads back in the game in the second quarter. I think we go out in the third and play well. We have two turnovers, they get a double-digit lead and that's it. We never got any defensive stops. You can't trade baskets."
Winfield (11-5) led 24-18 at halftime. Lewis, Cantrell and Keefer got the Generals going in the third period. They combined for 18 of the team's 20 points and the Generals stretched their advantage to 44-26.
"They doubled down on me and I got the ball to the open man," said Kline, who had the other two points.
"Our guard play was good," McGinnis said. "They were leaving the guards open and we got backdoor cuts. Plus we ran our break."
Hess said Kline will give all opponents trouble.
"He's one of the best big men in the state," he said. "When we'd double down, he did a great job of finding the open man."
Keefer had two of his three three-pointers in the second half.
"He's got a beautiful shot," McGinnis said. "Now he's got more confidence."
Huntington (6-10) is back in action Wednesday at Ripley. Winfield takes on PikeView at home Tuesday.
Even though Hayes netted 24, McGinnis said he was pleased with his team's defense.
"We don't key on any one guy," he said. "We have assignments and carry them out."
