MU well represented in soccer tournament

HUNTINGTON — In addition to the numerous players with local ties that will be involved with the tournament, there are several future players at Marshall University that will also be representing their club teams at the 2009 US Youth Soccer Region I Championships.

Marshall men’s soccer coach Bob Gray has a pair of players participating in the tournament.

Former Cabell Midland star Alex Molina signed a letter of intent earlier this year and will play with Charleston FC Elite in the Under-18 boys division.

Kyle Sniatecki also will be representing western New York as a member of the Empire United GU 19 Rochester team, which will battle in the Under-19 boys division.

Marshall women’s soccer also has several incoming freshmen taking part in the tournament this week.

Locally, former Huntington High player Molly Harrington will join former Parkersburg star Chelsey Maiden on the RVSC Shock team representing West Virginia in the Under-19 girls division.

Nitro High School standout Lindsay Kerns will also be representing the state in the Under-18 division as a member of the WVUSC Vision.

While several products will participate in the 2009 tournament, it is expected that the number will increase in future years as Gray and Marshall women’s soccer coach Kevin Long will use the tournament as a major recruiting tool for the future of the Thundering Herd programs.
