SV secures top seed for regional tournament
ONA -- It can be difficult playing a rival on consecutive days.
But, it wasn't a problem for Spring Valley's volleyball team.
Spring Valley secured the top seed for the Class AAA, Region IV volleyball tournament Wednesday by defeating Cabell Midland in the Section 1 finals, 25-18, 25-20, 25-19. The Timberwolves also beat the Knights in a Tuesday match of the double-elimination format.
"I'm always concerned when we play Cabell Midland, because they play us tough," Spring Valley head coach Joy Bailey said. "So they always bring their A game against us."
Cabell Midland also goes to the regional tournament Saturday at Spring Valley beginning at 2 p.m. Two teams from the Parkersburg sectional will join Spring Valley and Cabell Mldland at the regional. The regional champion and runner-up advance to the state tournament Nov. 13-14 in the Charleston Civic Center.
Knights coach Cindy Machmer said her team didn't perform well.
"We didn't play well defensively," she said. "We didn't pick up the balls we needed to pick up in order to win."
Hannah Bailey from Spring Valley recorded a double-double with 12 digs and 11 kills. Bailey surpassed 430 kills for the season. Cadara Cole had a solid night serving with 13 points.
The Knights had Stephani Lawrence had nine points while Caitlin Smith added seven kills.
Spring Valley played at a high level.
"We really wanted to go into the regional seeded first, and we were able to get the job done," Bailey said.
