May 07, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Barboursville boys and Milton girls crossed the finish line ahead of the pack Wednesday and captured the Cabell County Track and Field Championships at Huntington High School.

Barboursville cruised to the boys title with 174 points. Beverly Hills took second with 123 and Milton followed closely behind in third with 117. Huntington came in fourth by scoring 62 and Enslow was fifth with 38.

Milton girls dominated the meet with 243 points. Barboursville's girls came in second with 117 and Huntington was third with 76. Beverly Hills scored 59.5 to take fourth and Enslow finished fifth with 24.

Barboursville's Jacob Burcham took high point honors for boys with 28 points. Burcham won the 800 meters (2:14.30), 1600 (5:08.69) and placed second in the 3200 (11:02.78.) Burcham appeared to have the 3200 race won, but he suddenly pulled up in a nice gesture and allowed his teammate David Jobe to win the race in 11:02.78.

Jobe also placed second behind Burcham in the 800 (2;16.31), and the 1600 (5:08.69).

Burcham holds the nation's best middle school time in the 800 (2:05.5) and the 1,600 (4:38.1). Burcham is recovering from a pulled hamstring muscle and preparing for a national meet, so he said he didn't want to push himself and possibly re-injure the hamstring.

"I just paced myself today and I was more concerned with pushing the guys on the team to do well," Burcham said. "My times will continue to get better as I get healthier, but I was still happy with the way things turned out today."

Milton's Jordan Thornton was an integral part to her team's title by taking high point honor for girls with 38. Thornton won the 1600 (5:55.87), 3200 (12:39.45) high jump (4-05.00) and took second in the 800 (2:38.92).

Barboursville's Alex Ellis edged Thornton in the 800 by crossing the line in 2:38.92. Ellis was second in the 1600 (5:57.0) and the 3200 (13:02.02).

Barboursville's Lowell Farley displayed tremendous speed in the boys sprint events by winning the 100 (12.41) and the 200 (25.17). Both were close races, but Farley crossed first by maintaining his stride and closing strong.

"I ran good in the 200, but it was slippery and I thought I could have ran better in the 100," Farley said. "I haven't lost a race in the 100 or 200 yet this season."

Milton's Taylor Riedel and Haley Hall have battled back and fourth all year in the girls 200-meter hurdles. But when it mattered the most in the championship meet, Riedel sprinted to the win with a time of 31.90 and left Hall just a few steps behind at 32.22.

"It's been my goal all year long to win the county championship in the 200 hurdles and today I was able to accomplish that," Riedel said. "This was my last race in middle school and I wanted to leave everything on the track."

Morgan Zerkle and Grace Jarrell from Milton set the tone in the girls sprint events by taking either first or second in the 100, 200, and 400. Jarrell won the 200 (27.93), 400 (1:03.30) and placed second in the 100 (13.60). Zerkle won the 100 (13.57) and placed second in the 200 (28.12) and in the 400 (1:06.12).
