Barboursville's boys fall to Tennessee, 6-4
WARNER ROBINS, Ga. -- Tennessee champion South Nashville opened a 6-0 lead after three innings and held on to beat West Virginia champion Barboursville, 6-4, Monday in the final game of Pool B play in the Little League Baseball 11-12 Southeast Regional at Southeast Park.
Tennessee advances to the semifinal round scheduled Wednesday. South Nashville plays Florida at 2 p.m. South Carolina faces Virginia at 6. Both games are live on ESPN2. The winners will meet for the title and trip to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., on Friday at 7 p.m. That game will be live on ESPN.
Barboursville finished 1-2 in pool play and drops into the consolation round Tuesday. North Carolina and Alabama play at 10 a.m. and Barboursville meets Georgia at 1 p.m.
Tennessee took advantage of a Barboursville error to score its first run and Knox Preston added an RBI single to make it 2-0 after one. Zane Denton delivered a two-run double in the second to build Tennessee's lead to 4-0. In the third, Tennessee got another run home on a Barboursville error and Blake Kirchenbauer knocked in the second.
In the second, third and fourth innings, Barboursville loaded the bases each time, but managed to score just one run.
Jayce Gould's RBI double in the fourth got Barboursville on the board. In the fifth, Griffin Adkins drove in a run with a triple and Gould followed with a two-run homer off Tennessee reliever Blake Money to cut the deficit to 6-4.
Tennessee pitchers dominated early. Starter and winner Trae McLemore and Tanner Morgan combined for 11 strikeouts in the first four innings. McLemore fanned two in the first and struck out the side in the second and third. Morgan did the same in the fourth.
Jason Perdue started for Barboursville. Chad Heiner came on in the third and Gould in the fifth.
