Randy Moss and Jason Williams, on the list of former Marshall athletes who want to give back to the community, have done it again.
Moss, former wide receiver for the Thundering Herd and NFL All-Pro with the New England Patriots, has hooked up with his former teammate at DuPont High in the mid-1990s to conduct a benefit golf tournament June 27-28 at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club in Hurricane.
The first Learning Weekend Golf Extravaganza will start June 27 with a cocktail party. The next day is the golf outing, dinner and a sports memorabilia auction. Proceeds will benefit children in the area through golf learning centers, the first of which is scheduled to be built in Moss' hometown of Rand.
Troy Brown and Mike Bartrum, former ex-Herd greats who went on to the NFL, held their Brown-Bartrum Camp this weekend at Marshall. The wrapup is a golf tournament today at Twin Silos at Lavalette. Chad Pennington, former standout quarterback, held his 1st and 10 Foundation bowling fund-raiser last month at Colonial Lanes.
Williams, now a guard with the Miami Heat, played at Marshall in 1995-96 under coach Billy Donovan. He transferred to Florida the next season to join Donovan, who took the job as head coach of the Gators.
"This is his true statement of 'giving back'," said Donnie Jones, manager of Randy Moss Enterprises. "This will have a lasting impact long after his playing days. Randy is really looking forward to spending time with Jason again, because it has been difficult for them to get together because of their seasons that conflict with each other."
Because of the interest in this special event, golf groups will be filled strictly on a first come, first serve basis. Corporate sponsorships are available, too.
