Bulldogs beat Highlanders again

Apr. 12, 2013 @ 12:13 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Kristin Caudill's two-run homer highlighted a four-run first inning for Lawrence County. Not a good sign for Huntington High, which lost 8-1 to the Bulldogs in their first meeting earlier this season.

Come the third inning, though, the Highlanders rapped out five singles, scored three times and that led to Lawrence County starter Samantha Fitzpatrick being moved to left field and Ciana Bowen, a seventh-grader at Louisa Middle, taking over on the mound. Fitzpatrick tossed a three-hitter and got the win in that first meeting.

Then came the fifth inning, the downfall inning, the one inning the Highlanders seem to experience every game. Highlanders right fielder Savannah Elkins dropped a fly ball which would have been the third out of what would've been a scoreless inning. Instead, the Bulldogs scored three runs and the good fortune led to a 12-6 victory Thursday at Huntington High.

"One inning somewhere seems to get us," Huntington coach Darren Woody said. "I want the kids to move forward, learn from their mistakes and not make them again."

Michaelea Horn collected four hits and Taylor Porter, Caudill and Fitzpatrick had three each and the Bulldogs (11-4) finished with 17. Fitzpatrick drove in three runs. Porter belted the team's other homer.

Morgan Sawyers went 5-for-5 to lead Huntington's 13-hit attack. Freshman Madison Howell, making her first pitching start, had two hits as did Laura Collins. Rachel Bias drove in two runs.

"We hit the ball well," Woody said. "We could've scored more."

Woody had a shorthanded roster Thursday and led to Howell getting the start.

"She threw a lot of strikes," Woody said.

The Highlanders came in off losing two to Parkersburg on Wednesday night at home.

"We didn't play well," Woody said. "We'd give them five or six outs in an inning. You can't give any team that and expect to be in it."

Huntington's next game is Friday at home against Capital. Game time is 6 p.m. The Bulldogs return to action Saturday at home against Wayne. Game time is 1 p.m.
