Lola Roush Miller: Many Marshall memories

September 23, 2008 @ 09:20 AM

Lola Roush Miller of Huntington, who received a bachelor's degree in 1959 and master's in 1968, shared why she loves Marshall University:

I first came to Marshall in the fall of 1955. As a freshman, wearing my little green beanie with a white M on it, I was required to attend two Marshall football home games (as well as other athletic events and freshman convocations). The freshmen, and whoever wanted to join us, assembled at the front gates at Old Main and walked to Fairfield Stadium en masse. If I remember correctly, three to four sections were filled with Marshall students. It seemed like more than attend now. We even had card sections at one time. Marco had a companion, Marsha, at one time. I wonder what happened to her?

Marshall basketball was at a tremendous peak in the late '50s. Students would catch city buses to the Memorial Fieldhouse to see Charlie Slack, Cebe Price, Paul Underwood and Hal Greer.

I lived in Laidley Hall, worked at the James E. Morrow Library and began to bleed green.

In later years, my husband (also a Marshall grad) and I attended games when there would be barely 800 people. We sat in snow and rain, just to cheer the Herd. From 1990 to 2001, we barely missed a game at home or away. He passed away in 2001 and I don't attend games as much but I certainly enjoy them on TV.

The academic reputation has always been high and I am proud of my two degrees, one from Marshall College and one from Marshall University.
