Goodman wins title in Scratch Singles
HUNTINGTON -- The 23 bowlers competing in the Scratch Singles Tournament had their hands full with the U.S. Open oil pattern.
Only one player broke 800 for the four-game qualifier Sunday at Colonial Lanes. There were only 10 games of 200 or better with a 236 by No. 1 seed Joe McCoy the highest.
McCoy led the qualifier with 807 to get top seed for the stepladder finals. However, he pulled a muscle during warmups and had trouble executing shots during the title match against No. 2 Roger Goodman.
Goodman, a left-hander, shot 747 to get No. 2 followed by Jason Rowen with 743, Tommy Kalb with 727 and Brian Fite with 724.
Kalb beat Fite, 229-226, and Rowen eliminated Kalb, 170-169. Goodman stepped up and beat Rowen, 158-157, and McCoy in the title match, 197-188, to get the automatic invitation to the Tournament of Champions in December.
