Tenn. beats Ripley
CEREDO -- The second day of pool play saw four teams remain undefeated, making for an interesting final day of pool play today.
Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Virginia won Sunday to improve to 2-0 in pool play. Tennessee evened its record at 1-1 with a win over West Virginia while Indiana fell to 1-1 after losing to Virginia in the late game.
Cole Hill went 2-for-2 and drove in two runs and Cason Great went 3-for-3 to lead Columbus American (Ga.) past Valley Sports (Ky.), 6-2. Jordan Coffield got the win and also collected two hits. One of Great's hits was a home run.
Huntsville Eastern (Ala.) scored all its runs in the final three innings to defeat Greater Naples (Fla.), 5-2. Cole Prestegard and Whitt Davis had two hits each for Huntsville. Luke Beasley, who came on in the third inning, got the win. Bryce Morrow had two hits for Greater Naples.
Donelson (Tenn.) struck for four runs in the first and eight in the second to roll past Ripley (W.Va.) 15-5, in a four-inning game. This also was the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Benefit Game.
Jayme Gregory paced the Tennessee attack with a 2-for-4 effort and four runs batted in. Timmy Barton and Tyler Warmath each had three hits. Warmath also knocked in two runs. Left-hander Kirby Simpson went the distance to get the win.
Irmo (S.C.) defeated Tar Heel (N.C.) 10-0 in four innings on Sunday night, just one night after knocking off Ripley, 14-9. Lucas White drove in two runs for South Carolina.
Each team plays three games in pool play. Every team with a 2-1 record or better will be seeded according to Little League guidelines and advance to the single-elimination round beginning Tuesday.
Both teams with a 1-1 record will be tested today as Ireland (Ind.) will take on Irmo (S.C.) at 3 p.m. A win and Ireland is in; a loss and their tournament is over. It is the same for Donelson (Tenn.) when they take on Columbus American (Ga.) at 6 p.m.
Game action continues today at 11 a.m. at Mitch Stadium. Games can be seen or heard via the tournament Web site (http://www.mitchstadium.com).
