Herd women eye win over Furman

Dec. 20, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- After a disappointing home loss to Ohio over the weekend, Marshall's women's basketball team is looking to regroup this weekend with a contest against Furman.

Thursday's 2 p.m. contest pits a pair of teams who are struggling to find their range from the floor.

Marshall started out the Ohio game strong with Chukwuka Ezeigbo scoring the game's first 10 points, but she would not find the basket again as offensive troubles plagued the Herd throughout in the 62-54 loss.

Shay Weaver led Marshall (5-5) with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Former Huntington High standout Erin Bailes finished with 20 points in the win for the Bobcats.

Furman (3-6) has seen its own share of struggles offensively since leading scorer Sarah Durdaller went down with an injury a few games ago.

The Paladins have not scored more than 47 points during a five-game losing streak and have failed to reach 40 points in their last three games.

Teshia Griswold is averaging 14.3 points per game to lead all active scorers for the Purple Paladins.

The contest is only the second meeting between the two teams in 15 years as Marshall took a 62-54 loss to the Paladins last season in Greenville, S.C. The Thundering Herd leads the all-time series 16-15.
