Ironton beats Bell Multicultural

Dec. 21, 2012 @ 11:45 PM

IRONTON -- An extended layoff and no scouting report didn't bother the Ironton boys basketball team Friday night.

The Fighting Tigers got 23 points from Zac Carter and 19 rebounds from Trey Fletcher to roll past Bell Multicultural from Washington, D.C., 77-43, in an Ironton Classic game at the Conley Center.

Ironton last played on Dec. 12, a lopsided win over Waverly. And coach Mark LaFon didn't know anything about the Griffins coming into their game in the fifth annual classic.

"We came out strong, a great beginning," LaFon said. "We got through the quarter. It started to show in the second. Practice and games are two different things. We put some subs in and they responded."

Ironton (4-0) closes out tournament play Saturday against Eastmoor Academy of Columbus at 9:30 p.m.

"We know each other well," LaFon said of the matchup. "It'll be an up-and-down game."

Carter hit from the outside and found openings down the middle against the Griffins. When the defense collapsed on him, he would dish to Fletcher for the uncontested basket. Twice, Carter turned the ball over, but each time when the Griffin players went in for layups, he raced back to block the shot. On the second, he swatted the ball halfway up the bleachers.

"He's worked hard to be that way," LaFon said. "We see that kind of effort every day."

Devin Shuler had 18 points to lead the Griffins.

In other action Friday, Fairland beat Wesley Christian, 80-61, and M.A.C.K. Prep beat Christian Faith Center Academy 70-67. Hargrave Military Academy and St. Ignatius Prep met in the nightcap.
