St. Joe girls lose for first time this season

ATLANTA -- Webb School of Knoxville's defense in the second quarter made the difference Saturday against Huntington St. Joe in the White Bracket title game in the Peach State Basketball Holiday Invitational.

The Lady Spartans limited the Irish to just three points for a 29-15 halftime lead and they held off an Irish rally in the second half to post a 53-48 victory. Webb School improved to 13-4 and handed St. Joe (7-1) its first loss.

Katie Collier paced the Lady Spartans with 16 points. Webb School had eight players score.

The Irish got 41 of its 48 points from two players. Griffin Dempsey led the way with 24 points and Mychal Johnson added 17.

Each team had five three-point baskets. Dempsey connected on four for the Irish and Collier three. St. Joe finished 2-1.

St. Joe's off until Saturday when the Irish take on Greenup County in the Ashland Kitten Shootout at Ashland High's Anderson Gym. Game time is 3:15 p.m.

TOLSIA 66, KEYSER 50: Krista Maynard and Savannah Winnett each had double-doubles to spark the Lady Rebels (4-2) past the Golden Tornado in the Capital City Showcase at Charleston Catholic Athletic Complex.

Maynard finished with 26 points, 14 rebounds, 11 assists and six steals. Winnett hit for 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

Katie Hoban topped Keyser with 12 points.

Tolsia's next game is Thursday at Mingo Central.

CORAL REEF 75, IRONTON 73: The Florida school (13-1) edged the Fighting Tigers (6-2) in their final game in the Junior Orange Bowl Classic at Ronald Reagan/Doral Senior High School in Doral.

Zac Carter paced Ironton with 40 points, with 18 coming in the third period, and Trey Fletcher added 23 to go over 1,000 for his career.

TEAYS VALLEY CHRISTIAN 69, OHIO VALLEY CHRISTIAN 44: Zack Moore had 16 points to lead Teays Valley (10-3) past Ohio Valley (4-4) in the Big Blue Tournament at Wellston (Ohio) High School.

Elias Beacom, Ben Parsons and Justin Wojcieszak each totaled 14 points for the winners.

Ohio Valley's T.G. Miller topped all scorers with 22 points.

Teays Valley's next game is Friday at home against Cross Lanes Christian.
