Pitkin, Midland girls rout Capital
ONA -- Neither team shot particularly well and both committed multiple turnovers, but it was Cabell Midland's defense and presence down low that allowed the girls basketball team to cruise past Capital, 47-29, Tuesday night at home.
Emily Pitkin was the difference for the Knights (8-3) early, scoring eight points in the first quarter on her way to a 17-point, 12 rebound performance.
"She positioned herself to score, on rebounds she boxed out, she closed out on defense," said Cabell Midland head coach Matt Adkins. "Really good game for her tonight. I'm proud of her."
Fellow forward Sierra Jordan also put up 14 points in a game that never seemed to find its flow, but consistently saw Cabell Midland pulling away from the Cougars (3-4).
"The first half was a little slow," Adkins said. "I think we did a bit of a better job in the second half of closing out and moving on defense.
"Offensively, we did OK. We're not a high-scoring team so we sort of rely on our defense."
Cabell Midland held Capital to two points in the third quarter.
In the thick of the defensive chaos was senior point guard Grace Jarrell, who got a bit nicked up in the game. Jarrell was holding her hand throughout the first half, and appeared in the second half with a wrap around it, which seemed to limit her shooting. She still managed 10 assists.
It was a physical contest for both teams. The Knights' Karlee Alderman went down hard early in the fourth quarter and came up spitting out blood as she caught a wayward limb to the face in a scramble for a rebound.
"(Jarrell) I think just got her thumb dinged," Adkins said. "She's tough, she'll be all right. Alderman went down, but she's tough. She's a defensive machine and she'll go nose-to-nose with you."
Capital was led in scoring by Kiki Walker, who had 9 for the Cougars, seven of which came in the second half.
Haley Haggerty scored 10 for the Knights.
Cabell Midland next plays Thursday at home against Nitro.
