Hurricane's Coleman is Gamer of the Week

Jan. 18, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

Teays Physical Therapy Center Inc. and the Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week's Female Gamer of the Week to Claire Coleman of Hurricane High School.

The Hurricane High swim team has been making a splash this season with multiple wins and high point honors throughout the season. The standout swimmer for the girls has been Junior Claire Coleman. She has received high point honors at the University of Charleston Invitational and Hurricane's home meet at the Tri-County YMCA.

"Claire is a critical part of our ladies swim team. She has been our top scorer all season and relay anchor. She loves to swim and practices almost every day of the week and works very hard at every practice," said Coach Kathi Shurow. Her main and favorite event is the 100 meter butterfly, but she participates in most of the short distance events and relays.

Claire is very pleased in how the season has gone for her and the Redskins team but she knows that the Region 4 AAA meet is going to be very competitive. "Overall we have had a really good season. I am happy where I am right now but there is always room for improvement. Our region is the most competitive in West Virginia for swimming, but we should have several boys and girls team members going to states this year."

Her goals this season are to place well at the WV State Swim meet and to also swim a fast enough time to receive her national cut.

When asked who in her life has played a large role in keeping her motivated and driving her to perform better in swimming she responded with her father Lex Coleman. "All the Olympic swimmers are inspiring to me but my dad has always pushed me to be the best I can be. If I ever want to slack off, he is the one telling me to not stop and keep working hard."

This outstanding swimmer is also a great leader for her team. "As one of the team captains, she helps team members with their stroke and turn technique, assists with practice planning and helps to motivate and keep her teammates organized at swim meets" said Coach Shurow.

Claire is active at Hurricane High as part of the Mu Alpha Theta and Link Crew. She is a one-sport athlete, competing year round in swimming as a member of the YMCA's Wild Waves club team. Claire is an active member of the Charleston Catholic Church.

Look for other local area high school athletes to be named next week's Female Gamer of the week sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center Inc. and the Putnam Herald.
