Zach Shurow of Hurricane is Gamer of the Week
Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week's Gamer of the Week award to Zach Shurow of Hurricane High School.
High praises are being rained down on the Gamer of the Week, Zach Shurow of the Hurricane High School Swim Team. This year, Zach is Hurricane's top scorer with seven first-place finishes and six second-place finishes.
"Zach is instrumental at practices and strategizing for meets. His teammates have the utmost respect for him and listen to him when he coaches them," Assistant Coach Kendra Ragel said about the junior captain.
"Up until high school, I wasn't really ever the top person at anything in the pool. I started working hard and going to more practices trying harder in practice. That's when I really started to see a big change in my speed and drop my times," Zach said. "I've really enjoyed the team this year. Everyone gets along great and we always have a blast at meets. Everybody is improving. Where I'm a team captain, I help a lot with developing the younger swimmers so they can improve."
Zach holds himself and everyone around him to a high standard, which makes him a fierce competitor. When asked about his expectations for the rest of the season he commented, "For states this year, we plan on finishing top three in two of our relays, and my goal is to get top four in both of my individual events."
Competitive nature is most of the time driven by a strong inspiration; such is the case with Zach Shurow.
"I've been swimming almost my whole life. I would say I draw my motivation from my coaches. They motivate me to keep going even when it gets boring. My coaches tell me to snap out of it and keep working hard and it helps get me back on track," he said.
Zach is a model student athlete with a 4.0 GPA and extracurricular activities such as: Spanish Club, Ski Club, Chemistry Club, and Wild Waves Swim Club Team.
Please look for other local area high school athletes to be named next week's Gamer of the Week sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center Inc. and The Putnam Herald.
