Coal Grove posts victory over Deming High, 64-49
MOUNT OLIVET, Ky. -- Coal Grove found itself in trouble Saturday night in its game against Deming High.
Senior point guard Alex Bare sat out most of the game with a severe ankle sprain. Starter Brandon Adkins found himself in early foul trouble.
Reserves Trevor Barrett, Isaiah Gunther, Joe Akers and Jonathan Joseph picked up the slack and led the Hornets to a 64-59 victory over the Devils.
Deming trailed 41-38 in the third period when Joseph hit on a jumper to help extend the lead to 50-43 when the period ended.
In the fourth, Sean Paulus and Akers scored to stretch a 3-point lead to 57-50 with 4:10 to play. Gunther converted all six free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
Conor Markins paced the Hornets with 26 points and Paulus added 14.
Darrin Edwards connected for 22 points for the Devils before he fouled out in the fourth period.
Coal Grove's next game is Tuesday at Fairland. It's the final game of the regular season.
