Marshall to face Tulane in first round of hoops tournament

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall's Thundering Herd and Tulane play the 8-9 game in round one of the Conference USA men's basketball tournament.

No. 9 seed Marshall (13-18, 6-10) meets No. 8 Tulane (18-13, 6-10) at 9:30 p.m., Wednesday, at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla. Tulane won its Feb. 6 regular season game with Marshall in New Orleans, 91-75.

The winner gets No. 25 Memphis (27-4, 16-0), the top-seeded regular season champion, at 6 p.m., Thursday, in the quarterfinals.

Other teams with first-round byes are No. 2 Southern Miss (23-8, 12-4) , No. 3 UTEP (17-13, 10-6), No. 4 East Carolina (18-11, 9-7) and No. 5 Tulsa (16-14, 8-8).

The tournament will have 11 teams because UCF is not eligible for postseason play because of NCAA sanctions for recruiting violations.
