Chesapeake qualifies for Ohio state golf tournament

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio -- The Chesapeake High School golf team qualified to play in the Ohio Division II State Tournament, Oct. 12-13, on Ohio State's Scarlet Course in Columbus.

The Panthers shot 330 and finished second in the district tournament Wednesday at Pickaway Country Club. Unioto won with 328. Gallipolis and Fairfield Union tied for third at 331, but only the top two teams advance to Columbus.

"We were able to turn things around," Chesapeake coach Terry Kimball said. "The players came through when it counted."

Nick Duffield led Chesapeake with 77 and shared second with Rob Canady of Gallipolis. Canady qualified for the state tournament as an individual.

Other Chesapeake players and scores were Shane Stevens (84), Drew Oxley (84), Eric Sias (85) and Seth Waggoner (86).

Cheapeake is in the State Tournament for the first time since 1993.

In Division III, Coal Grove's Brad Morgan qualified to play in the State Tournament on Oct. 12-13 at North Star Golf Resort in Sunbury. The sophomore shot 76 in the district tournament Tuesday at Cumberland Trail Golf Course in Pataskala. Coal Grove shot 357 as a team. Conor Markins carded 86, Cody Davidson 91, Brandon Adkins 104 and Justin Mullens 118.

Wellington and Columbus Academy tied for first with 309, but Wellington won the tiebreaker by one stroke to claim the district title.


BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Ashland and Boyd County failed to make the cut 18-hole cut in the girls state tournament at Bowling Green Country Club. Anna Hack of Callaway County was medalist with a 2-under-par 142. Sacred Heart won the team title by 22 shots over Calloway County.

Ashland and Russell have teams in the boys state tournament scheduled Friday and Saturday at Bowling Green Country Club.

Playing for Ashland are Evan Cox, Nick Blankenship, Logan Jones, Thomas Hall and Tate Justus. Russell's lineup has Bobby Thomas, Sam McGuire, Johnny McGuire, Kyle Groce and Tony Huddleston. Greenup County's Kadin Ashley qualified as an individual.
